Ghost Ants in Tampa Homes: ID and Treatment
A ghost ant is tiny, about one sixteenth of an inch, with a dark head and thorax and a pale, almost translucent abdomen and legs. It trails along counters, backsplashes and bathroom fittings in Tampa homes all year. Spraying the trail is the common mistake, because the colony buds and splits into several new nests deeper in the wall.
How to identify it
Very small, around one sixteenth of an inch. The head and thorax are dark brown, while the abdomen and legs are so pale they look see through, which is where the name comes from. Crushed, they smell faintly like rotten coconut.
They move in fast, erratic trails, usually a single file line running along a grout line, the edge of a backsplash, the seam of a countertop, or the caulk line around a sink or tub.
Where they show up and why
Kitchens and bathrooms, because they want moisture and sugar. Trails typically run from a window frame, an outlet, a cabinet edge or around plumbing, then straight to the sink, the dishwasher, a spill or a pet bowl.
The nests are often outside in mulch, leaf litter, potted plants and palm boots, with foragers coming in through weep holes, the A/C lineset penetration and window frames. They will also nest indoors in wall voids, behind baseboards, inside a potted houseplant and in the space behind loose tile. A single colony has many queens and many nest sites, which is why it behaves differently from the ants people are used to.
What works, and what does not
Non-repellent liquid products applied at the entry points and along the trails. The ants walk through without detecting it and carry it back, which reaches the nests you cannot see. Alongside that, a sweet liquid bait placed near the trail, left undisturbed, gets shared through the colony over a week or two.
Moisture control helps: fix the drip under the sink, pull mulch back from the wall, cut back branches and shrubs touching the house, and get pot saucers off the porch slab.
What does not work is the can of ant spray under the sink, and neither does wiping the trail away with bleach and hoping. Repellent sprays and heavy cleaning of the trail before treatment both push the colony to bud and split. If you have already sprayed, leave the area alone for a few days before we come out.
Common questions
Why do they come back a few days after I spray?
Because spraying works against you with this species. A repellent product tells the colony the area is hostile, and ghost ants respond by budding: a group of workers and a queen move off and start a new nest somewhere else in the wall or in a potted plant. You end up with more nests than you started with.
Are they the same as sugar ants?
Sugar ant is a catch-all name people use for any small ant going after sweets. In Tampa homes it usually means ghost ants, sometimes white footed ants or big headed ants. They look alike at a glance and they take different baits, so the species gets confirmed at the inspection before anything is applied.
Do they bite or damage anything?
They do not sting and they do not damage the structure. The problem is contamination and volume. They get into sugar, pet food, an open cereal box and anything left on a counter, and a trail can run continuously for weeks. In a kitchen that is reason enough to deal with it properly.
